Salukombo leads Big Red at NCACs

Junior Dee Salukombo won the 1,500 meter run and the 5,000 meter run helping lead his Denison squad to a tie for fifth place at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship.

Salukombo won his second and third conference outdoor championships of his career on Saturday.  In the 1,500 meters he set a new conference record after posting a time of 3:54.07.  The previous record was set by Allegheny's Tony Dipre in 2009 with a time of 3:54.19.  Placing seventh in the 1,500 was Chad Kosanovich who covered the distance in 4:00.15.

In the men's 5K, Salukombo won the race with a time of 15:01.33.  He qualified for the NCAA Championship last week after setting a new school record with a time of 14:18.83 in Hillsdale, Mich.

In the 4x100 relay, Chris Roth, Pat Effinger, Michael Cohen and Dimonde Hale covered the 400 meters in 44.01 seconds to finish fourth and pick up five points for the team.  In the 4x400 relay, Effinger, Cohen and Hale teamed with Win Fox for the seventh place finish in 3:32.24.

In Saturday's field events, senior Steven Gallego finished eighth in the javelin with a distance of 156'2".  Joe Nichols placed 10th in the high jump by clearing 5'5.75".
