Despite battling thunderstorms and delays, the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field championship got underway at Oberlin College on Friday. The Big Red posted scoring performances in four events to open the two-day meet.
Denison was led on Friday by sophomore Wendell Taylor who turned in a seventh-place finish in the shot put and an eighth-place finish in the discus to earn all-conference honors in both events. In the shot put, Taylor's sixth and final attempt turned out to be his best as he threw the shot 42'9.75" to earn two points for the Big Red. In the discus it was the opposite for Taylor as his first attempt would be his keeper after he fired the discus a career-best 116' to take eighth.
In the long jump Joe Nichols also turned in a career-best showing with his jump of 19'9.75" which landed him in eighth place overall.
In the running events, junior Alexander Chappars paced Denison with a seventh-place finish in the men's 10,000 meters in 32:05.99. He was followed by Russell Holden in 12th place (33:27.82) and Steven Johnson in 14th in (33:40.96).
Most preliminaries were washed out due to the rain and lightning delays, however, sophomore Dimonde Hale did compete in the 400 dash prelim and he turned in a season best time of 49.07 to check in fourth heading into Saturday's finals.
