The Denison men's outdoor track and field team won four events while turning in nine, top-3 finishes at the non-scoring Denison Invitational from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium on Friday night.
Three of Denison's victories came from Dimonde Hale in the 400 meter dash, Chad Kosanovich in the 1,500 meter run and Chris Roth, Pat Effinger, Michael Cohen and Hale in the 4x100 meter relay. In the 400 meter dash, Hale posted a season-best time of 49.30 while Kosanovich covered the distance in 4:04.98 to win by more than six seconds.
In the 4x100 relay, DU turned in a time of 43.65 to best Wittenberg who crossed the finish line in 44.47. Roth, who ran on that 4x100 relay team also posted second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. In the 100 meter dash, Roth posted a time of 11.31 and came back with a 23.03 in the 200 meter dash.
In the long jump, Joe Nichols placed second with a distance of 18'9.25" and Wendell Taylor posted a third place showing in the shot put with a heave of 40'5.5". Senior Steven Gallego closed out Denison's winners with a victory in the javelin after a throw of 168'3".
In addition, at the 45th Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., Denison junior Dee Salukombo shattered a 38-year school record in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:18.83. The previous record of 14:38.8 was set by James Alexander in 1973. Salukombo's time is the second-fastest in all of NCAA Division III so far this year.
