DU finishes seventh at NCAC Championships

Sophomore distance runner Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) was named the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Distance Athlete of the Year after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finishing second in the 5,000-meter run on the second day at the NCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

 

Salukombo finished the steeplechase in 9:32.19, over three seconds faster than Kale Booher of Ohio Wesleyan University.  The second-year runner returned to take second in the 5,000-meter run after crossing the line in 15:20.35.

 

As a team the Big Red finished sixth overall with 56 points.  Junior Steve Gallego (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan) repeated as the conference champion in the javelin with a toss of 185-04, which was more than nine feet farther than runner up Evan Groninger of Wabash.  After logging a fifth-place finish in the long jump on Friday, freshman Cal Keating (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame) took fifth in both the high jump and triple jump on Saturday.  Keating cleared 5-08.72 in the high jump, and registered a combined leap of 42-06.25 in the triple jump.

 

In the track events, rookie Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) post earned All-NCAC status after finishing third in the 400-meter dash.  Hale completed the race in 49.65, which was five-hundredths of a second fast than OWU's Matt Martin and Allegheny's Taylor Throckmorton and just 21-hundredths of a second behind runner up Seth Wimberly of Oberlin. Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.20, while the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams both finished seventh.  The 4x100 team of Roth, Todd Johnson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles), Steven Czujko (Silver Spring, Mass./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Joe Thackery (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) clocked in at 48.39, while the 4x400 foursome of Hale, Chris Black (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), Pat Effinger (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) and Thackery crossed the line at 3:27.68.
