The Denison men's outdoor track & field team compiled 15 top-eight performances, including two race titles as the Big Red finished third at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday from Washington, Pa. DU finished the meet with 88 points.
Denison sophomore Dee Salukombo (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) repeated as the 3,000-meter steeplechase champion after finishing the race in 9:57.52, over 20 seconds fast than runner-up Matt Brush of Allegheny.
Rookies Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) and Robert Fox (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) took third and fourth in the 400-meter dash with times of 51.15 and 52.77, respectively. Sophomore sprinter Chris Roth (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) logged a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash after crossing the line in 22.96.
In the field events, first-year Cal Keating (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame) brought home a pair of top-four finishes. Keating finished runner-up in the high jump after clearing 6-02.75, and was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21-00.75. Bill Horn (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) also took second in the pole vault with a mark of 12-05.50, while Steve Gallego (Lyndhurst, N.J./New Canaan) finished third in the javelin (155-10).
The Big Red got the majority of their scoring in the 5,000-meter run where they placed five athletes in the top-eight. Sophomore Alex Chappars (Xenia, Ohio/Bellbrook) led the way for DU by capturing the event title with a time of 15:52.98. Finishing right behind Chappars was teammate Russell Holden (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) who logged a time of 16:07.87. Occupying the fifth through seventh spots were Alphonse Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Daniel Doggett (Byfield, Mass./The Governor's Academy) and Steve Johnson (Xenia, Ohio/Bellbrook). The trio finished the race in 16:18.09, 16:28.01 and 16:30.00, respectively.
Denison returns to action on Saturday (April 10) when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University for the Marv Frye Invitational.
