The Denison University Athletic Training Mission is to deliver quality sports medicine services to the varsity intercollegiate athlete who is enrolled in this university. Care will be split between sport coverage and clinical rehabilitation.

- Athletic related injury/illness evaluation and rehabilitation
- Available to in-season and out-of-season athletes
- Completed as individual appointments during clinical hours – 11:00am – 3:00pm
- Additional treatment times may be added according to athletic trainer availability
Sport Coverage
In-Season Sport Coverage
Coverage for in-season teams, in terms of practice and competition, will be dictated by conclusions defined by the Appropriate Medical Coverage of Intercollegiate Athletics Recommendations and Guidelines, created by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and outlined by Daniel Arnheim in Modern Principles of Athletic Training.
Based on reviewed injury trends and classification of injury risk, collision sports have priority over contact sports, which have priority over non-contact sports, which have priority over no-contact sports in terms of athletic training coverage. In regards to home and away games, coverage goes to in-season collision sports, then home athletic events and championships (in order of injury risk), then practice coverage (in order of injury risk), and then away non-championship athletic events, when possible. In the event that a varsity team is traveling with no coverage, the athletic trainer in charge of that team will attempt to arrange with the host school for any special needs that team may have.

Championship Coverage
All NCAC championship events held at Denison University will receive athletic training coverage as outlined by the NCAC Athletic Trainers’ Guidelines. Away NCAC and NCAA team championship events will be a priority for coverage. During NCAC and NCAA championship dates, in-season home practices may not be covered if resources do not allow. In this event, coaches will be responsible for activating the emergency medical procedures appropriate if injury should occur. We will not, as a policy, cover away NCAC and NCAA no-contact sports or any individuals moving on in championships. If you would like coverage for one of these events you may make an individual request to the Head Athletic Trainer.
Out-of-season/non-traditional season coverage
Due to a lack of resources, the athletic training staff does not cover out-of-season/non-traditional athletic contests and practices. Coverage for these events is the responsibility of the coach, who will be trained in first aid, CPR and the appropriate Emergency Medical Plans.
Return-to-Play Decisions While Away From Denison
All return-to-play decisions are the responsibility of the specific Head Athletic Coach while traveling away from Denison, when not accompanied by a certified athletic trainer.
Scheduling
All game, practice, and departure times, as well as activity locations, should be given to the team Athletic Trainer no later than one month prior to a game and one week prior to practices.
Any changes or adjustments to the above should be discussed with the Athletic Trainer in writing (email) as soon as such changes are known. Failure to comply with scheduling requests or sudden schedule changes could result in no medical coverage for a particular event. In these cases the coach assumes responsibility for these events and provides service as emergency medical plan outlines.
Visiting Team Policy
Denison University Sports Medicine will, in accordance with state licensing laws and our team physician, provide visiting teams with the space and resources needed to provide medical care for their team upon arrival if such resources and space are available. If your team is traveling without medical supervision, the certified athletic trainers and Denison University upon receipt of a referral from a proper practitioner will provide those services needed as space and resources allow. If you are not sending medical supervision Denison University will provide emergency first aid and CPR but will not make return to play decisions for visiting teams.
* All athletes have 24-hour access to the Denison University Health and Counseling Services located in Whisler Hall on the east side of campus. Routine medical care is available seven-days each week during academic intervals. Physicians and a nurse practitioner see students Monday through Friday by scheduled appointments. Call ext. 6200.
