Denison Sports Medicine Concussion Management Plan

  1. concussion Obtain Baseline Testing: Through evaluation of symptoms, cranial nerve assessments.
  2. Concussion Identified and Assessed: All athletes suspected of a concussion will be subject to physical examination consisting of a thorough evaluation of symptoms, cranial nerve assessments and neuropsychological testing (SCAT). All athletes will be withheld from all sports related activity; given concussion information home instruction sheet.  This initial assessment will be performed by the Denison University medical staff (athletic trainer, nurse practitioner and/or physician). If the physician is not immediately available, athlete will be referred to one for evaluation in a timely manner.  If the nature of the concussion is emergent, athlete should be transported to the closest emergency department.
  3. Concussion Management: Athlete is withheld from all physical activity: The Athlete will be re-assessed daily by medical staff until completely asymptomatic; (consideration of academic modifications/restrictions if necessary).
  4. If re-evaluation indicates Return to Baseline function: Athlete has returned to baseline levels of symptoms, cognitive function, and balance, then the return to play progression can be initiated. Return to play guidelines are based upon the Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (McCrory P, et al. Br J Sports Med 2013;47:250–258).
  5. If test results NOT Returned to Baseline: Re-evaluation for medical clearance must include evaluation by physician, consider neuropsychology consult with more detailed test battery. When medically cleared by physician, repeat exertion testing; re-evaluation by physician for return to play decision.
