Denison University senior midfielder Colleen Wirtz
(Westerville, Ohio/DeSales) has been named to the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America first-team as selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A biology major, Wirtz has played and started all 83 matches in
her four-year career with the Big Red. She leaves Denison tied for
sixth all-time in goals scored with 33 and in eighth place in
points with 81. This season, Wirtz led Denison to their best
post-season finish in school history. The Big Red went 16-4-4 and
advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight for the first
time.
Wirtz is a two-time NSCAA All-American, a three-time All-North
Coast Athletic Conference first-team pick and a three-time
all-region selection. In her four seasons with the Big Red, Wirtz
leaves with a career record of 56-20-7 (.675). They have been
ranked nationally each season, have captured one NCAC Tournament
championship and one NCAC regular season title and have advanced to
the NCAA Tournament two times. This marks the second-consecutive
Academic All-America award for Wirtz. Last seasons she was named to
the ESPN The Magazine third-team.
Created in 1952 by the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA), the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
Teams Program is the premier, nationwide college scholar-athlete
awards program. It recognizes 816 outstanding student-athletes
annually in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA
championship sports. Wirtz is the 40th Denison student-athlete to
receive Academic All-America accolades.
