Gorsich named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Squad

Denison University senior women's tennis player Erin Gorsich (Dover, Ohio/Dover) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® third-team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) on Thursday (June 12).

Gorsich completed an outstanding four-year career by posting a 3-0 record in doubles play in the NCAA Division III Championship, helping the Big Red to their best team finish in school history (third).  She was the No. 4 singles player and teamed with Kara Zdanowski at No. 3 doubles to post a 12-2 record in 2008.  Gorsich played in 137 career matches at Denison and was 38-16 in singles play and 58-25 in doubles action.

Gorsich boasts a 3.83 grade point average in biology and is a 4.0 student in her major.  She was one of seven Presidential Medalists in 2008 which is the highest honor bestowed upon a graduating senior from Denison and was awarded a Battelle Scholarship for biological research in Costa Rica.

In addition to her remarkable scholarship in the classroom, Gorsich's volunteer work and commitment to the environment should be commended.  A volunteer with HOPE for Autisim and the New Beginnings batter women shelter, she is also an executive of Denison's Green-Team.  Gorsich spent a semester abroad in Kenya and spent Christmas breaks working with the Cherokee Nation tribe and the Lost Boys of Sudan refugee program.

Gorsich will attend graduate school and pursue her doctorate at Oregon State University next fall.  She is the 50th Academic All America selection from Denison University and the second from the women's tennis program, joining Erin Coughlin who was a third-team selection in 2006.

Created in 1952 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Teams Program is a premier, nationwide college scholar-athlete awards program. It recognizes 816 outstanding student-athletes annually in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
