Denison University senior Michael Barnes (Gates Mills,
Ohio/Mayfield) has been named to the 2009 ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America® first-team for men's track and
field as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA). This is Barnes' second consecutive Academic
All-America® award. He was a second-team pick in 2008 and
is a three-time Academic All-District pick in track and field and
football.
A two-time North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Sprinter of
the Year, Barnes captured five NCAC Championships in his four-year
career at Denison to go along with 14 all-conference
performances. At the 2009 NCAC Indoor Championship, Barnes
defended his conference championships in the 200 and 400 meter
dash's. He was also a part of the third-place 4x200 meter
relay. This past fall he was named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District second team for football after rushing for
551 yards and passing for 1,152 yards to go along with 16 total
touchdowns.
Barnes was one of five Denison Presidential Medal recipients and he
is also the outgoing President of the Denison Student Athlete
Advisory Council. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Phi
Society and carried a 3.87 grade point average as an economics
major.
Barnes is the 56th Academic All-America selection from Denison.
He is also the 10th Big Red athlete to earn multiple Academic
All-America certificates.
