Built in 1949, Livingston Gymnasium has served as the home of Denison University's volleyball, men's basketball, and women's basketball programs for more than 75 years. Located inside the Mitchell Center, the historic facility seats approximately 1,500 spectators and provides an exciting game-day atmosphere for student-athletes, alumni, and fans. Throughout its history, Livingston Gymnasium has hosted numerous North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championships, NCAA Tournament contests, and other major campus and community events.
The facility has undergone several renovations to enhance both the student-athlete and fan experience while preserving its rich tradition. In 2005, new chairback seating and upgraded bleachers were installed, improving spectator comfort and providing better sightlines throughout the arena. A decade later, in 2015, the original playing surface was replaced with a state-of-the-art hardwood court designed to provide greater shock absorption, improved player safety, and enhanced performance.
Additional upgrades over the years have included a modern sound system, energy-efficient LED lighting, skylights that bring natural light into the facility, and other infrastructure improvements that have modernized the venue while maintaining its historic character.
Livingston Gymnasium is named in honor of Walter Livingston, a distinguished Denison alumnus, former Director of Athletics, Hall of Fame coach, and one of the most influential figures in the history of Big Red Athletics. His legacy continues to be reflected in one of the university's most iconic athletic venues, where generations of student-athletes have competed and countless memorable moments have taken place.
