2001 SWIMMER OF THE YEAR TAMARA CARTY SETS CONFERENCE RECORD, DENISON
FINISHES SECOND
CANTON, Ohio - Heading into the third and final day of competition, the
Denison women's swimming and diving held a 22 point lead over the Ladies
of Kenyon College. However, the margin was not enough. The Big Red swam
with determination and pride but were unbale to hold off the late Kenyon
rally.
When all events were complete and points counted, Kenyon had claimed its
16th NCAC championship edging out the Big Red by only six points.
2001 Swimmer of the Year, Tamara Carty, had another record breaking night
setting a new conference record in the 1650 Yard Freestyle. Touching the
wall in 16:56.53, Carty beat the old record by nearly 14 seconds. In the
100 Yard Freestyle, Denison place three swimmers in the top eight. Erin
Stanley tied Keynon swimmer Beth Galloway for first place with a time of
52.95; Kate Flikkema and Mollie Parrish tied for fourth finishing in
53.59; and Chrissy Havach placed sixth with a time of 53.76. Denison
finished one, two in the 200 Yard Breastroke as Kaite Sprague and Alyssa
Heidinger finished in 2:23.18 and 2:23.20, respectively.
During the three day event, Denison recorded eight first-place finishes,
set four NCAC records and had two "1,..2,..3.." finishes. Denison will
travel to Cleveland for the Case Western Reserve Classic on Saturday,
February 17. Swimmers qualifying for the NCAA National Championships will
travel to Buffalo, N.Y. on March 8-10.
