GAME SUMMARY:
DENISON ADVANCES TO REGIONAL FINAL
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In the regional semifinal, Denison (18-1) struck first
when a shot from freshman Jessica Hazen (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) found the
top of the goal in the 13th minute of play.
Mary Washington (12-5) answered in the 28th minute when freshman Mandy
Thorpe (Springfield, Va.; Annandale) got her own rebound off Denison
keeper Liz Clapacs (Euclid, Ohio; Hawken) and one-touched it in to knot
the score at 1-1.
The Big Red took the lead for good when freshman Meghan Overom (Duluth,
Minn.; Marshall School) caromed a shot off an Eagle defender and into the
Mary Washington goal for the game winner in the 67th minute. Freshman
Sarah Finke (Centerville, Ohio; Centerville) added an insurance goal with
less than three minutes remaining to seal the victory.
Denison and North Carolina Wesleyan will battle for the right to advance
to the quarterfinals of the national tournament beginning at 1 p.m. on
Sunday at Shellenberger Field.
