Wilmington 2, Denison 1

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Quakers of Wilmington College (15-4-1) defeated
host Denison University (13-3-1) by a 2-1 score in NCAA Division III Great
Lakes Regional semifinal action here Saturday. Wilmington now advances to
the NCAA Regional finals versus Ohio Wesleyan, a 3-1 winner over Albion in
the other Great Lakes semifinal, on Sunday, November 5, at 1 p.m. in
Granville.

After a scoreless first half, the Big Red of Denison drew first blood on a
goal from senior midfielder Emily Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio; Fairmont) with
an assist from junior forward Dana Grandmaison (Duluth, Minn.; Marshall
School). Gerstle's go-ahead goal came 52:59 into the contest.

The Quakers didn't take long to answer as junior forward Lauren
Klingenberg (Edgewood, Ky.; Scott) found the back of the Denison net off a
corner kick from senior forward Nicole Woods at 58:08. Klingenberg's score
tied the match at 1-1, and the score would remain knotted until the 90th
minute.

Just when the game looked as if it were headed to overtime, Woods put
another Quaker corner kick in front of the Denison goal with 40 seconds
remaining in regulation. Wilmington freshman forward Brooke Cotrell
(Urbana, Ohio; Northwestern) was at the right place at the right time and
delivered a well-placed header into the Big Red net for the game-winner.

The upset over Denison, ranked third in the Great Lakes Region and 16th
nationally, extends Wilmington's late-season winning streak to seven
games. Head coach Steve Spirk's Quakers came into today's contest ranked
fifth in the region.

On the day, head coach Gail Murphy's Big Red outshot Wilmington, 10-6.
Denison also led in corner kicks, 7-3. The Big Red were called for 15
fouls compared to the Quakers' 11, and there were no cards. Wilmington
goalkeeper, senior Maria Hurley (Xenia, Ohio; Xenia), made six saves and
allowed one goal in 90 minutes of play. Denison junior keeper Elizabeth
Clapacs (Euclid, Ohio; Hawken School), who also went the distance, was
credited with three saves and gave up both Quaker goals.
