2000-01 NCAC Relay Meet
October 28, 2000

MEET SUMMARY (RESULTS BELOW)
The 2000-2001 NCAC season was barely five hours old as the sun set
Saturday, October 29, and history had already been made.
The Big Red swimmers and divers of Denison University began their
intercollegiate season with impressive finishes this weekend at the NCAC
Relay Meet in Gambier, Ohio.
The women claimed the first spot with 162 points, followed by Kenyon
College at 140 and the College of Wooster at 130. The Big Red men
finished second with 136 points, behind Kenyon College at 162 points and
ahead of Allegheny College, which earned 104 points.
The women, victorious for the first time in meet history, dominated,
winning six of the eight swimming events. The defending national champion
200 medley relay team of Sophomore Leah Favret, Junior Alyssa Heidinger,
Junior Mollie Parrish and Sophomore Erin Stanley won the first event of
the afternoon with a victorious time of 1:49.50. Heidinger then led
off the 200 breastroke Relay in 31.09, where she was joined by Junior
teammate Nedra Watler, Sophomore Deb Janssen and Senior Katie Sprague who
further distanced the Big Red to finish first.
Next came the 500 (50 - 100 - 150 - 200) crescendo relay where Parrish and
Junior Kelly Cantwell joined two of the meet's stand-out performers to
deliver another win for the Big Red. Stanley split 52.60 in the 100 leg,
while Senior Amy DeVito brought the relay home in a 1:55.93
in the 200 component of the race.
Denison's most impressive win came from DeVito, Cantwell and sophomore
Tamara Carty in the 1500 freestyle relay. DeVito led the relay off in a
personal best time of 5:12.25, handing off to Cantwell, who split 5:16.91.
2000's NCAC swimmer of the year, Carty, brought the relay home in 5:06.70,
breaking the meet record by nearly 10 seconds.
The Big Red then went on to win the 400 IM relay, led off by Sprague in
1:02.24, followed by Watler in 1:04.24, DeVito in 1:02.39 and Stanley in
1:02.09.
DeVito, Sprague, Parrish and Stanley finished off the afternoon with
another win in the 200 freestyle relay, where Stanley once again
established herself as the sprinter of the meet, splitting 23.93.
Big Red divers Elena Casal and Kim Snyder started their season with high
marks, solidifying Denison's place on top in the NCAC. The senior duo
scored high enough for second in the one meter competition and enough for
third on the three meter board.
The Big Red men earned second place team honors this year, finishing
second in nine of the ten relays.
Junior standout Trent Johnson led the Big Red sprint corps, anchoring the
200 medley relay with a time of 21.17 ? the fastest Denison 50 of the
meet. Johnson also proved to be a very versatile swimmer, participating
in the second place efforts of the Big Red's
200 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle relays, in addition to the
200 medley relay.
Seniors Adam Daigneault and Brian Goldthorpe were also among Denison's
most distinguished swimmers, racing on three second place relays each.
Daigneault, like Johnson, proved to be valuable in a number of areas,
including the 200 breastroke, butterfly and 400 IM relays, splitting a
56.09 in the lead off of the 400 IM relay. Goldthorpe earned his place as
Denison's top sprint butterflyer with the two fastest Big Red butterfly
splits of the meet, including a 23.45 in the 200 medley relay.
Ben Douglass was another key player for Denison at the NCAC Relays,
contributing to the second place efforts of Denison's 200 medley, 200
breastroke and 400 IM relays. His 50 breastroke split of 27.97 was the
fastest of the day for the Big Red.
Denison's 1500 freestyle relay team of Juniors Drew Anderson, J.P.
AuWerter and Adam Ziegler placed second with an all-around great efforts
by the DU distance corps. Anderson led off the relay in 4:55.15, AuWerter
kept the momentum in place with a 5:01.25 and Ziegler finished it off in
5:00.15.
Denison's diving combination of Senior Stephen Spring and Sophomore Scott
Siegel also earned second place points in both the one and three meter
combinations.
