DENISON WINS 13-8 IN REMATCH WITH OHIO WESLEYAN
===============================================
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the ninth-ranked Denison University Big Red
and eighth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops faced off for yet another
exciting lacrosse match. Today belonged to Denison as the Big Red avenged
their 11-9 loss suffered at Ohio Wesleyan on March 31 with a solid 13-8
victory.
Meeting for the second time in the 2001 season, this non-conference
mathcup had NCAA implications as OWU appears on its way to another
conference title and certain berth into the NCAA Tournament. With the win,
Denison is almost certainly guaranteed a bid as well to the NCAA
Championships in May, where they could meet up with the Bishops again.
OWU struck first blood on a goal by Matt Bagley (Machester,
N.H.;Derryfield School) 1:32 into the game. Denison answered right back
less than a minute later when senior middie Brad Meyer (Devon, Pa.;
Conestoga) found senior captain Sean O'Brien (Mountain Lakes, N.J.;
Mountain Lakes) for the tieing goal. DU, fired up and ready to play,
rallied off four goals to Wesleyan's one to take an early 5-2 lead. In
the first quarter, Denison's scoring came from five different players,
O'Brien, senior Dave VanLokeren (Milford, Pa.; Lawrenceville), juniors
Kip Hale (Salida, Colo.; Pomfret School) and Jon Staunton (Charlottesville, Va.;
St. Ann Belfield) and, sophomore Kevin Sullivan (Timonium, Md.; Boys' Latin School)
The Bishops dominated the second period. Thier stingy defense shut out
the potent Big Red attack and allowed only five shots on goal. Ohio
Wesleyan jumped right back in the game with three unanswered goals by
Jason Fogelson (Bridgewater, Conn.;Canterbury School), Jeff Lovell
(Summit, N.J.;Summit) and Frank Beford (Villanova, Pa.;Radnor). The three
goal rally evened the score at five apiece heading into halftime.
All tied up in the third period Denison struck first with a goal by
Sullivan only twenty seconds into the period. The Big Red never looked
back as Sullivan's goal gave them the lead for good.
Tenacious defense and great goalkeeping by junior Peter Royer (Avon,
Conn.; Westminster School) allowed the DU offense to lengthen their lead
to as much as 9-5 in the third period. Royer allowed only one goal on 14
shots by OWU in the third quarter.
Heading into the fourth period with a 9-6 lead the Big Red knew they
needed more goals to assure a victory. Attacking the goal Denison broke
out for another three goals on only seven shots. OWU countered with two
goals in the fourth but was unable to close DU's lead.
Pacing the Big Red on offense was O'Brien with four goals on the
afternoon. Sullivan followed with three scores while Hale added two goals
and two assists to DU's victory. The Battling Bishops were led by
Fogelson with two goals and four assits.
In goal, Royer was unbeatable making 16 saves on 36 shots, eleven of those
coming in the second half alone. Corey Ayers tended the net for Ohio
Wesleyan and made 15 saves on 50 shots.
