GAME SUMMARY:
LEXINGTON, Va. -- In the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's
Lacrosse Championships, the seventh-ranked Big Red of Denison University
(13-2) were able to upset the second-ranked Generals of Washington and Lee
University (13-2) by a convincing 17-7 score on W&L's Wilson Field here
Saturday. The Denison win, which is the Big Red's second-ever NCAA
postseason victory after defeating Ohio Wesleyan (12-2) in the first round
on Wednesday, advances DU to the tournament semifinals against the winner
of Sunday's quarterfinal game between Hampden-Sydney (11-3) and host
Salibury State (14-1) on Saturday, May 22. The site and time for next
Saturday's semifinal match are yet to be determined, and will be announced
following the completion of the tournament's other three quarterfinal
contests (Hampden-Sydney at Salibury State, Rochester Institute of
Technology at Gettysburg, Middlebury at Washington), all being played on
Sunday.
The Big Red (13-2) opened up a 4-0 lead with 5:09 remaining in the
first quarter and rode the quick start to an 8-4 halftime advantage.
Denison used the third quarter to claim an 11-6 advantage entering the
fourth period and poured it on, tallying the first six goals of the final
period before W&L ended the rally with the game's final goal with less
than three minutes remaining.
Washington and Lee was penalized nine times during the game, and
Denison made good on four of the nine extra-man opportunities.
