GAME SUMMARY:

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In a clash of Midwest powers, Denison University
defeated Ohio Wesleyan in the first round of the NCAA Division III
Championship Tournament here Wednesday by a 12-8 score. The win, which is
the first-ever NCAA postseason victory for Denison (12-2), sends the Big
Red to Lexington, Va., on Saturday, May 15, for a quarterfinal bout with
the Generals of Washington and Lee University (13-1) at 1 p.m.

This was the third time that Denison and Ohio Wesleyan had met this
season, with the Big Red winning the first at OWU, 14-9, and the Bishops
prevailing in the rematch at Denison, 10-9.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead at the begininng of the game on goals
from Jason Fogelson (12:31) and Dan Stroka (10:02). Denison, however, was
able to tie the score with answers from Mark Penske (9:45) and T.J. King
(8:53). The Bishops then regained a 3-2 lead with 5:35 remaining in the
first quarter on a rare man-down goal from Evan Dunne.

Denison's Frank Pennimpede tied the game early in the second period
(13:28), and Dunne put the Bishops back on top, 4-3, with 7:30 left in the
first half. DU was able to close out the second quarter scoring on goals
from Pennimpede (6:34) and T.J. Minogue (3:05) to take a 5-4 lead into
halftime. The Big Red would never trail from that point forward.

In the third stanza, Minogue struck first for Denison at 14:52, and
OWU's Matt Coughlin answered at 12:19 to keep it a one-goal game at 6-5.
In the latter stages of the third quarter, DU's Penske (7:54) and Drew
Jones (3:05) scored to give the Big Red an 8-5 lead entering the final
period.

The fourth quarter saw four goals scored within a 1:30 period as Sean
O'Brien scored for Denison at 12:48, followed by a quick goal from
Fogelson (11:57) and a quicker goal from Dunne (11:38). Denison then had
its own face-off-to-net score from King (11:24) to suddenly make the score
10-7. Jones followed up for Denison at 9:25, before the Bishops' Scott
Jackson scored at 8:27 with a man advantage to bring OWU to within three
at 11-8. From that point, King was the only player to score again, getting
an insurance goal for the Big Red at 4:04 with a two-man advantage and
bringing the final tally to Denison 12, Ohio Wesleyan 8.

In the game, Denison goalie Peter Royer was credited with 20 saves
for a .714 saves percentage. OWU goalie Corey Ayers made 13 stops for a
.520 saves percentage. DU outshot the Bishops 52-48, and won the ground
ball battle 34-23. Ohio Wesleyan held the advantage in face-offs, winning
14 of 23. OWU had one man-advantage goal in four tries, while the Big Red
had one man-up score in seven opportunities.

This was Denison's 10th trip to the NCAA Championships, and with
their first win, the Big Red are now 1-9 in NCAA play. The Bishops have
made the playoffs 16 times and now own a 16-16 postseason record.
