GAME SUMMARY:
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Denison University defeated the College of Wooster and
clinched the Big Red's fifth North Coast Athletic Conference Men's
Lacrosse Championship here Saturday night. The 19-3 victory over the
Fighting Scots (3-9 overall, 1-4 NCAC) wraps up the 1999 regular-season
schedule for Denison (11-2 overall, 5-0 NCAC). The Big Red, ranked
seventh in the current Division III pole, will now have to wait a week for
the announcement of the pairings for the 1999 NCAA Division III Men's
Lacrosse Championship which will be made Sunday evening, May 9.
Versus Wooster, Denison took a 4-0 first-quarter lead and looked back.
The Big Red added eight more unanswered goals in the second period, and
three more in the third quarter to build a 15-0 lead before the Scots were
finally able to get on the board with two goals late in the third.
Substituting freely throughout the game, DU outscored Wooster again in the
final period, 4-1, to post a convincing 19-3 final score.
Denison's Ryan Berger scored a game-high three goals, while Matt
Nierenberg had a team-high two goals for Wooster. Denison goalie Peter
Royer stopped two Wooster shots in first half, allowing no goals, before
Michael Tobler took over in the second half to make one save and allow
three goals. Scot netminder Joe Borchelt made 30 saves for Wooster and
allowed all 19 Big Red goals.
