GAME SUMMARY:
On Saturday, the Big Red of Denison traveled to Fort Washington, Pa., to
battle the Pioneers of C.W. Post at a neutral field at Germantown Academy.
Denison mounted a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter on goals by
Sean O'Brien, Justin Walker, Dave Beaver and T.J. Minogue.
The Pioneers opened the second period with goals from Ernie Thompson and
Gavin Chamberain to close the Denison lead to one. With 3:30 to go in the
half, Justin Walker added a goal for the Big Red, giving DU a 5-3 halftime
advantage.
The third quarter saw Walker and T.J. King scoring goals early, only to
have them answered by as Drew Cavadias and Chamberlain, who closed out the
period with consecutive Pioneer scores to set up the dramatic final
quarter.
C.W. Post took control in the first 5:30 of the fourth period with back-
to-back-to-back goals from Todd Bolognese, Benny Cottone and Joe Buccello,
earning the Pioneers their first lead of the game at 8-7. At the 7:36
mark, DU's Drew Jones was able to tie the game at 8-8, and with 4:04 left
on the Germantown clock, Big Red freshman Ryan Berger supplied the heroics
for Denison with its ninth and winning goal on an assist from Walker.
DU's Walker led all scorers with three goals and one assist, while Post's
Bolognese paced the Pioneers with two goals and one assist. Big Red goalie
Michael Tobler had a busy afternoon with 11 saves, while Pioneer goalies
Vin Fredricks and R.G. Degenfelder combined their efforts to stop 12
shots. Denison which outshot C.W. Post 46-32.
Denison (9-2) entered the game ranked eighth in Division III will travel
to Birmingham, Mich., to play another Division II opponent, Northwood
University, on April 28. C.W. Post, the fourth-ranked team in Division II
will return to NYCAC action at Molloy on April 28.
