DENISON UNIVERSITY BIG RED MEN'S LACROSSE REPORT
________________________________________________
DATE: April 20, 1999
OPPONENT: Wittenberg University Tigers
FINAL SCORE: Denison 19, Wittenberg 4
SITE: Granville, Ohio
HEAD COACHES:
WITTENBERG: Bruce Reid
DENISON: Mike Caravana
GAME SUMMARY:
Denison's men's lacrosse took a 8-1 lead in the first quarter and never
looked back as the Big Red defeated the Tigers of Wittenberg University,
19-4, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.
Wittenberg struck first with a goal by senior Mark Burrell in the opening
minute of play, but Denison reeled off the next ten scores before Burrell
was able to find the DU net again with eight minutes remaining in the
first half. Denison substituted freely in the second half, outscoring
Wittenberg 6-1 in the final two quarters.
Denison (8-2, 4-0 NCAC) was paced by sophomore Sean O'Brien, who was
credited with four goals and three assists. Senior T.J. Minogue added two
goals and two assists for the Big Red. Wittenberg (7-4, 2-1 NCAC) was led
by Burrell, who scored a team-high two goals.
In goal for Denison, freshman Peter Royer and junior Michael Tobler
combined their efforts for 11 saves while sophomore netminder Charlie
Hamilton made 23 saves for the Tigers.
With the win, the eighth-ranked Denison team clinches at least a tie for
the conference championship in 1999, and a win over Wooster on May 1 would
give the Big Red the outright title. Wittenberg drops to second place in
the league with NCAC games against Wooster and ninth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan
remaining.
Denison will travel to Fort Washington, Pa., to challenge C.W. Post in a
non-conference contest on the neutral turf of Germantown Academy on
Saturday, April 24 at 1 p.m. Wittenberg will continue league play at
Wooster on April 24 at 1 p.m.
