DENISON MEN OUTLAST R.I.T. IN DIVISION III THRILLER
___________________________________________________
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The ninth-ranked Big Red of Denison University hosted
the seventh-ranked Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology in a
classic NCAA Division III match-up here Saturday, and sent RIT back to New
York with a 14-13 loss.
Denison had to come from behind to beat RIT, as the Tigers jumped out to a
3-0 lead early in the contest on a goal from Kevin Langdale and two more
from Marc Heagney. Coach Mike Caravana's Big Red squad closed the gap to
one at the end of the first quarter on scores from Drew Jones and Mark
Penske. RIT's Chris Whipple scored the first goal of the second period and
Heagney added the last 46 seconds before halftime, but in between, the Big
Red found the Tiger net four times on scores by Penske, Jones, Frank
Pennimpede and Sean O'Brien, and DU was able to take a 6-5 lead into
halftime.
Throughout the second half, the Big Red would never give up their lead,
and they managed to mount a four-goal advantage early in the fourth
quarter after scoring the final goal of the third quarter (Justin Walker)
and the first two goals of the final period (Jones, Penske). From that
point forward, Denison would watch its comfortable lead melt as Coach Guy
Van Arsdale's RIT team outscored the Big Red 5-2 on single goals from
Langdale, Clay Westbrook and Hunt, followed by two scores from Eric
Carlsen. As the Tigers were working to gain possession of the ball in
their own end of the field in the final minute, however, they were
penalized, and the Big Red were able to maintain hold onto the ball with
their man advantage and preserve the one-goal victory.
Denison, now 3-1 on the season, was led in scoring by Jones (4/0), Penske
(4/0) and Pennimpede (2/2). The Tigers, who suffered their first loss of
the young '99 campaign and currently stand at 2-1, were paced by Langdale
(3/2), Hint (3/2) and Heagney (3/0). In goal for the Big Red, Peter Royer
made 19 saves, while Adam Platzer was credited with 17 stops for RIT.
Denison opens its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule on Tuesday at
Kenyon College, while RIT continues its season at non-league Elmira on
Wednesday.
