DENISON UPENDS LACROSSE TIGERS, 10-5, IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (May 9, 2001)?Kevin Sullivan and Andy MacIlwaine each scored three goals to lead
the Denison University Big Red (11-3) past Hampden-Sydney (11-4), 10-5, today in the opening round
of play in the 2001 NCAA Division III Men?s Lacrosse Championships. The victory means Denison will
play Salisbury State on Saturday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland. The Seagulls defeated
Stevens Tech 16-3 earlier today.

Sullivan started the Big Red off with two goals in the first four minutes of action while Kip Hale
and MacIlwaine each added one a piece as Denison bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of
action. Ryan Berger?s first goal of the game early in the second quarter made it 5-0 Denison before
Jason Rostan (Farmville, VA) broke through with a goal for the Tigers.

However, MacIlwaine and Sullivan both added one more goal to put the Big Red up 7-1 at the half.
The teams played even in the third quarter with John Neely (Annapolis, MD) scoring two for the Tigers,
while Berger and MacIlwaine scored for Denison.

In the fourth, the Tigers were finally able to cut into the Denison lead, outscoring the Big Red, 2-1,
but it was too little too late. Kip Hale added the Big Red?s only fourth quarter strike and despite
goals by Roger Dael (Bel Air, MD) and Nick Piraino (Baltimore, MD), Denison won the contest, 10-5.

?We were very intense and focused on playing a good game today,? said Denison coach Mike Caravana.
?We play a different style than does Hampden-Sydney and it was important for us to score early and get
out on top so that we could control the tempo of the game.?

Denison held the advantage on shots, 32-30, and ground balls, 42-39, while both teams won eight face-offs.
Denison keeper Peter Royer made 14 saves in the net, while the Tigers? Scott Fava (Baltimore, MD) recorded 12.

?We just didn?t play well in the first half?we weren?t very aggressive and got ourselves into a hole
early and you can?t do that against a good team,? said Tiger skipper Ray Rostan. ?Their (Denison?s) goalie
made some excellent saves in the first half and our youth showed in our shot selection, aside from that
we just didn?t do the same kinds of things today, like winning faceoffs and getting all the groundballs,
that we did in our win over Washington and Lee.?
