GAME SUMMARY:
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In a clash of Midwest lacrosse powers, Battling Bishops
of Ohio Wesleyan University defeated Big Red of Denison University in the
first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Wednesday
(May 10) evening by a 13-10 score. The win for Ohio Wesleyan (14-3), sends
the ninth-ranked Bishops to Rochester, N.Y., this weekend for a
quarterfinal bout with the second-ranked Golden Flyers of Nazareth
College. Date and time of that game are still to be determined. This was
the third time that Denison and Ohio Wesleyan had met this season, with
the Bishops winning the first at Denison, 12-9, and the Big Red prevailing
in the rematch at Ohio Wesleyan, 12-8. The seventh-ranked Big Red
concluded their 2000 campaign at 11-4.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter on goals from four
different players. Junior Sean Norris (Scituate, Mass.; Boston College
High) was involved in two of the Bishop scores, netting a goal and an
assist in the first period.
The second quarter saw similar action as OWU notched the first three goals
of the period to take a 7-2 lead. Sophomore attackman Matt Coughlin
(Denver, Co.; Regis Jesuit) scored the first two markers of the second
stanza on his way to a four-goal game. Denison came back, adding two goals
before the intermission as sophomore Ryan Berger (Devon, Pa,; Conestoga)
scored the first of his three goals on the afternoon. At the half the
Bishops held an 8-4 advantage.
The Big Red entered the second half on fire, as they scored five
unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead. Junior Sean O'Brien (Mountain Lakes,
N.J.; Mountain Lakes) scored two of the five goals and assisted on
another. The Bishops were finally able to break their second-half drought
and score the final goal of the third quarter as junior Jason Fogelson
(Bridgewater, Conn.; Canterbury School) found the back of the DU net on an
assist from senior Dan Stroka (Flemington, N.J.; Hunterdon Central). A
game that looked like it might get out of hand at halftime was now knotted
at 9-9 entering the final period.
The Ohio Wesleyan rally continued in the fourth quarter, as the Bishops
scored four times to seal the 13-10 victory. OWU regained the lead just 34
seconds into the period on an unassisted goal from sophomore Scott Jackson
(Worthington, Ohio; Thomas Worthington). Big Red junior Sean Furber
(Narberth, Pa.; Lower Merion) answered to tie the game at 10-10 with 13
minutes remaining, and the count remained deadlocked until Stroka,
Coughlin and Fogelson all scored in the final five minutes. Stroka and
Fogelson hit their goals in man-up situations.
In the game, Denison goalie Peter Royer was credited with eight saves,
while Corey Ayers made 17 stops in front of the Bishop net. DU outshot
Ohio Wesleyan, 45-34, and won the ground ball battle, 46-34. Denison also
held the advantage in face-offs, winning 17 of 27. OWU scored three extra-
man goals in seven tries, while the Big Red hit two man-up scores in seven
opportunities.
