GAME SUMMARY:
GRANVILLE, Ohio ? Sophomore attack Kip Hale (Salida, Colo.; Pomfret
School [Conn.]) led Denison University, the sixth-ranked team nationally
in Division III, to a conference win over 13th-ranked Kenyon College here
Tuesday night under the lights of Barclay-Thomsen Field. Hale netted four
goals as Denison was able to win the game and grab a share of the North
Coast Athletic Conference lead with along Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan. The
win pushed the Big Red record to 9-2 (3-1 NCAC) and the loss was the first
of the season for the Lords (10-1, 4-1 NCAC).
DU junior attack Sean O'Brien (Mountain Lakes, N.J.; Mountain Lakes)
followed up a Hale's first goal with one of his own to give the Big Red a
2-1 advantage at the close of the first period.
The second period saw more strong defense from both squads, but it was
dominated by the Big Red who scored three goals before Kenyon answered
with the final score of the first half. In the second quarter, O'Brien
collected two assists as junior attack T.J. King (West Hartford, Conn.;
Hall) scored the first of his two goals on the night. Senior Kenyon attack
Evan Bliss (Bethesda, Md.; Landon), who currently leads the nation in
scoring, was able to only manage one point on the night with 3:12
remaining in the second quarter cut the Big Red advantage to 5-2 at the
half.
Each team was able to muster only two goals in the third period as the
defensive struggle continued. Both of Kenyon's scores came from sophomore
attack Justin Martinich (Bay Shore, N.Y.; Bay Shore), while Denison kept
pace on goals from senior middie Drew Jones (Princeton Junction, N.J.;
Peddie School) and O'Brien.
The fourth quarter saw the Big Red wear down the Lords as Denison
stretched its lead to five goals by the end of the contest. Hale scored
two more times and King racked up another goal and an assist in the final
stanza. Sophomore midfielder Charlie Rich (Wellesley, Mass.; Roxbury
Latin) scored the Lords' final goal, but Kenyon never came closer then a
three-goal margin during the last period.
In net for the Big Red the entire game was sophomore Pete Royer (Avon,
Conn.; Westminster), who made 17 saves. Playing 60 minutes for the Lords
in front of the Kenyon goal was junior Greg Clancy (East Falmouth, Mass.;
Falmouth). Clancy came up with 16 saves on the night.
Up next for the Big Red are the top-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury State,
who will bring their perfect 15-0 record to Granville on Saturday, April
22. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. The Lords will remain on the road as they
visit Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, on April 22 at 1 p.m.
