GAME SUMMARY:

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- On a cool spring day at Denison University's legendary
Barclay-Thomsen Field, the host Big Red were defeated by sixth-ranked
backyard rival Ohio Wesleyan (6-1; 1-0 NCAC) by a 12-9 score. The
Battling Bishops won the important North Coast Athletic Conference contest
on the strength of a big third quarter, in which they outscored eighth-
ranked Denison, 4-0.

Denison (5-2; 1-1 NCAC) opened the scoring on junior Sean O'Brien's
(Mountain Lakes, N.J.; Mountain Lakes) goal with an assist from sophomore
Ryan Berger (Devon, Pa.; Conestoga) just 1:12 into the game. O'Brien and
Berger, DU's scoring leaders this spring, would finish the game with two
goals and two assists each. OWU answered 15 seconds later on a goal by
junior Jason Fogelson (Bridgewater, Conn.; Canterbury School) who was
assisted by senior Alex Wiser (Norwalk, Conn.; Green Farms Academy).
Denison took the lead again on an unassisted goal from freshman Keith
Bishop (Dublin, Ohio; Coffman) before Ohio Wesleyan knotted the score
quickly on a goal by junior Sean Norris (Scituate, Mass.; Boston College
High). Norris finished the afternoon as the game's top goal scorer with
four.

In the second period, Denison took the lead again, 3-2 on an unassisted
man-up score by sophomore Kip Hale (Salida, Colo.; Pomfret School
[Conn.]). Ohio Wesleyan then earned its first advantage of the day on
successive unassisted goals from sophomore Scott Jackson (Worthington,
Ohio; Thomas Worthington) and senior Dan Stroka (Flemington, N.J.;
Hunterdon Central). DU tied the game again at 4-4 on a goal from senior
Drew Jones (Princeton Junction, N.J.; Peddie School), assisted by O'Brien.
OWU, however, was able to take a 5-4 lead into halftime as junior Jim
Papczynski (Lakeville, Ind.; Culver Military) scored with 3:46 left in the
second quarter. Papczynski's score was the first of six unanswered Ohio
Wesleyan goals through the next 20-plus minutes.

The third quarter saw Wesleyan get two more goals from Norris, and one
each from freshman Steve Muskopf (Orchard Park, N.Y.; Orchard Park) and
sophomore Matt Coughlin (Denver, Colo.; Regis Jesuit) to end the period
with a 9-4 advantage. OWU also opened the scoring in the fourth stanza as
junior Jeff Lovell (Summitt, N.J.; Summitt) found the back of the Denison
net with 13:52 remaining.

Big Red sophomore Geoff Mitchell finally ended Denison's drought and began
a valiant comeback effort with a goal on an assist by Berger with 10:56
left in the game. Norris answered again for the Bishops, but DU was
persistent in its rally. Big Red junior Sean Furber (Narberth, Pa.; Lower
Merion) scored Denison's next goal, and O'Brien found the OWU net to close
the Bishop lead to 11-7. Wesleyan got its final score of the afternoon on
an insurance goal by junior Charlie Cotter (Needham, Mass.; Needham), and
Denison completed the day's scoring on two unassisted goals from Berger in
the final three minutes of play.

Sophomore Big Red goalie Peter Royer (Avon, Conn.; Westminster School)
played the entire game, making 21 saves on the afternoon, while junior OWU
starter Corey Ayers (Chattanooga, Tenn.; McCallie) made 18 stops.
Sophomore Bishop sub Natty Felder (Charlotte, N.C.; Charlotte Country Day)
made a brief appearance in goal during a penalty to Ayers, making one save
and giving up one goal.

Denison will remain home for its next contest, a non-conference bout with
Greensboro College on Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m. Ohio Wesleyan will
remain on the road, as the Bishops face conference foe Kenyon College in
Gambier, Ohio, on Wednesday, April 5, at 4 p.m.
