GAME SUMMARY:
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- On a sunny spring-like afternoon at Denison
University's Deeds Field, the host Big Red were able to control the pace
and possesion, earning a convincing 13-4 win over visiting St. Vincent
College in the season opener for both squads.
The Big Red jumped out to a 5-0 first quarter lead and expanded their
advantage to 10-1 by halftime. Sean O'Brien scored four of DU's
first-half goals and assisted on a fifth, while Ryan Berger netted two
goals, and T.J. King scored one and assisted on another.
The third quarter saw a slower-paced game as veteran Denison head coach
Mike Caravanna substituted freely. Berger picked up a third goal and Geoff
Mitchell added his second of the game for Denison. St. Vincent's scoring
came from Chuck Holland who added a goal to his previous assist and Ryan
Beiser scored to cut the Big Red lead to nine as the third period ended
with Denison up, 12-3.
The fourth quarter saw only two goals, one for each team. Denison's T.J.
King picked up his second goal of the game on an assist from Drew Jones.
The Bearcats closed out the scoring on a late goal from Dan Keating off an
assist from Beiser.
The Big Red were led in scoring by O'Brien who netted with four goals and
one assist. King ended the day with two goals and one assist. First-year
coach Peter Tulk's Bearcats were paced offensively by Holland and Beiser
who were credited with one goal and one assist each.
In the first half, Big Red goalie Peter Royer made six saves?and allowed
one goal, while in the final 30 minutes he was tested more often, having
to make 13 saves while giving up a total of four goals for the game. St.
Vincent goalie Chris Stiles played the entire game, making 17 saves for
the Bearcat cause.
