DENISON FALLS TO CORTLAND STATE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
ANNVILLE, Pa. -- The Denison University Big Red field hockey squad
completed its season bowing to Red Dragons of Cortland State (N.Y.), 3-2,
in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships
here last Saturday (November 6). Denison, the 1999 North Coast Athletic
Conference champion, came into the game with a 16-3 overall record,
including a perfect 12-0 league ledger.
Cortland struck first on goal 10 minutes into the game, and found the
Denison cage two more times in the final 16 minutes of the first half to
take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Denison, was not about to go quietly, however, as the Coach Alix Rorke's
Big Red battled back. DU broke the ice on an unassisted goal by senior
forward Laura Griffin 12 minutes into the second stanza. Less than two
minutes later, junior midfielder Sarah Rent put Denison back into the game
with a goal on an assist from Griffin.
That was to be the end of the scoring for Denison and Cortland, as both
teams played shutout hockey for the final 20 minutes of the contest. The
following day, the Red Dragons advanced to the national quarterfinals,
where they defeated host Lebanon Valley College, 1-0, in a game that,
after going scoreless for 70 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of
sudden-death overtime, was decided on strokes. Cortland will now face
Amherst College in the semifinals at the Final Four in Ewing, N.J., on
November 13.
Griffin finishes her senior season as both Denison's and the NCAC's
leading scorer with 14 goals and seven assists for a 1.75 points per game
average. Junior forward Keri Arnold is second on both lists with a 1.40
ppg average. Junior goalie Elise Ludwig completed her season with 83
saves while allowing only 11 goals, and she led the conference with a
remarkable 12 shutouts.
