DENISON DEFEATS WOOSTER IN FIELD HOCKEY TOURNAMENT FINALS;
DU REIGNS AS CONFERENCE AND GREAT LAKES REGIONAL CHAMPION
OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Denison University field hockey team defeated
the College of Wooster, 1-0 in overtime, in the championship finals of the
NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Oberlin, Ohio, on
Sunday. The win came on a goal by junior forward Julie Nuse 5:39 into the
first sudden-death overtime period. Nuse, whose game-winning score was
only her second goal of the 1999 season, had just re-entered the game
before performing her overtime heroics.
Head coach Alix Rorke's Denison stickers are currently ranked 14th in
Division III with a 16-3 overall record, and this fall, the Big Red won
their first outright North Coast Athletic Conference crown since 1994 with
a perfect 12-0 league ledger.
As regional champion, Denison will hear on Monday from the NCAA who
its next opponent will be, and when and where the game will be held.
National NCAA first-round games will be played on November 3 at campus
sites.
Wooster finishes its season with an 11-7 record and runner-up
finishes to Denison in both the NCAC and the Great Lakes Region. Prior to
Sunday's overtime contest, Denison had defeated Wooster twice in
regulation by scores of 3-2 (September 21) and 2-0 (October 14).
