Big Red Blitz DePauw, Defeat Top Seed Wittenberg to Advance in Winners Bracket of NCAC Tournament

Springfield, Ohio - The Big Red softball team picked up two clutch wins in the NCAC Tournament, defeating No. 2 seed DePauw 10-1 in six innings, and claiming a 6-3 win over host Wittenberg to stay alive in the winners bracket. Senior Brooke Surbaugh blasted a grand slam in game one to kick start the day for Denison, and the Big Red tallied 20 hits across the two-game stretch. Denison moves to 19-19 on the year.

Game One: Denison 10, DePauw 1

Denison got off to one of its hottest starts of the season, as Brooke Surbaugh belted a grand slam in the first inning to go up 4-0 early. It was Surbaugh's fifth home run of the year, and leads the Big Red.

Moffitt got to work quickly, striking out a Tiger in the bottom of the first to continue the Big Red momentum. After a Brianna Gonzalez walk and Alex Longstreth reached first on an error, Indy Workman was able to bring home Gonzalez on an RBI single to add some insurance, 5-0.

After the Tigers were able to get back one in the bottom of the second, the Big Red continued to pour it on, as Riley Smith put a ball in play to score Moffitt, then Gonzalez singled to bring in another to make it 7-1. Workman built upon the lead, scoring two on a single, then Carley Melton singled as well to bring in Longstreth to make it a 10-1 ballgame. The Big Red scored five runs in the third inning alone, and tallied four hits.

Moffitt continued to deal, as she only gave up one hit in the next three innings to pace the Big Red on the defensive end. With the Tigers unable to secure two runs, Denison would defeat the No. 2 seed Tigers in six innings, 10-1.

Denison accumulated six hits, two of which came off the bat of Surbaugh, who also had a game-high four RBI's. Workman also had a multi-RBI game, scoring three. Melton and Gonzalez each had an RBI a piece as well.

In the circle, Moffitt pitched five innings, giving up five hits, one earned run, and one strikeout against 20 batters. It is her eighth win of the season.

Game Two: Denison 6, Wittenberg 3

The bats stayed quiet throughout the first three innings, as Surbaugh would only give up three hits through the three frames to stay dialed in the circle. Gonzalez would break the scoring open with an RBI single to score Leilah Ferrari and give the Big Red an early 1-0 lead.

The Tigers would respond with a run of their own off of a sacrifice fly, and the two would be tied 1-1 heading into the fifth.

In the fifth, Denison found their stride, as Moffitt and Surbaugh would single to get on base, and Ferrari ripped a double to left field to score Moffitt to go up 2-1. In the next at bat, Riley Smith would follow with a single to right field, scoring two to go up 4-1.

Wittenberg gathered two runs in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the Big Red lead to within one heading into the final frame.

Up 4-3, Denison secured some much needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as Gonzalez singled to shortstop to bring in Andrea Care, and Workman put a ball in play to score Smith for a two-run inning to go up 6-3. Care would come into pitch for Surbaugh, and would secure the save after a one, two, three inning to give Denison a big-time win to advance to the winners bracket, 6-3.

Smith and Melton paced the offense with three hits a piece, with Smith racking in two RBI's in game two. A total of seven Big Red registered hits, with five being multi-hit games. Denison accounted for 14 hits and only struck out once.

In the circle, Surbaugh pitched 6.0 innings, giving up six hits, one earned run, one walk, and two strikeouts. Care earned the save in the final inning of play, making it her second save of the season.
