GRANVILLE, Ohio — Denison Softball battled No. 17 Case Western Reserve on Tuesday, earning a split behind a commanding Game Two shutout from Madilyn Moffitt. After the Spartans claimed the opener, 7–3, the Big Red responded with a 3-0 win to close out the doubleheader at home.Â
Game One: Case Western Reserve 7, Denison 3
Denison fell behind early as Case Western put together a three-run second inning, adding another in the third to build a 4–0 lead.
The Big Red answered in the fourth inning when Madilyn Moffitt doubled to right center to bring home Emerson Seevers, putting Denison on the board. An inning later, Seevers came through again with an RBI single to right, scoring Alex Longstreth and trimming the deficit to 4–2.
Case Western regained momentum in the sixth inning with a pair of RBI singles to stretch the lead to 6–2, and added an unearned run in the seventh to make it 7–2.
Denison pushed across one more run in the bottom of the seventh as Indy Workman scored on a passed ball, but the comeback fell short as the Spartans secured the 7–3 victory.
Seevers and Moffitt led the Big Red offensively with an RBI each, Moffitt led an two hits. Denison finished with seven hits, including contributions from Rosie Witt, Workman, Carley Melton and Lonstreth.Â
Game Two: Denison 3, Case Western Reserve 0Â
Denison took control early and never looked back, securing a 3–0 shutout victory in game two.
The Big Red struck in the second inning when Workman delivered a two-RBI single to right field, driving in Ferrari and Riley Smith while advancing to second. The early burst put Denison ahead 2–0 and set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Denison added to its lead in the fifth inning as Witt came home on an RBI double to center field from Smith, extending the advantage to 3–0. Though Moffitt advanced to third on the play, she was tagged out at home attempting to score.
Strong defense and pitching carried the Big Red the rest of the way, holding Case Western scoreless to secure the shutout win.
Workman fueled the offense with two RBIs, while Smith added an RBI and scored a run. Ferrari and Witt also crossed the plate, helping Denison split the doubleheader.
Moffitt only allowed one hit at the plate with eight strikeouts and one walk in 84 pitches.
