Columbus, Ohio- Rolling to its third win in a row, the No. 18 Denison women's lacrosse team defeated Capital University 20-9 on the road. The Big Reg scored early and often, moving to 3-2 overall while the Comets dropped to 3-2 for the season.
The Big Red struck first when
Caroline Brooks found
Anna DeVuono for the first of her seven goals of the night, a career high for DeVuono. Thirty seconds later the Comets answered with a goal to knot the game at one apiece. Not flustered by the response, Denison's Brooks and DeVuono tacked on two more goals 11 seconds apart to give a 3-1 lead over Capital. From there the Big Red didn't let up, averaging five goals per quarter and jumping to a double-digit lead by the middle of the third quarter.
Denison outshot its opponents 42-16, collected 20 ground balls to Capital's 12, and grabbed 20 of the 33 draw controls. On defense, the Big Red recorded 11 caused turnovers throughout the game, and gave up just two of the five free-position shots.
DeVuono led the Big Red with seven goals, followed by Brooks,
Mary Martinson, and
Hana Asghari with two goals apiece. Seven additional players tacked on one goal each to bring the Big Red's total to 20. Martinson jumpstarted Denison's offense grabbing eight draw controls throughout regulation and
Tessa Espinosa helped facilitate the Big Red's scoring after dishing out a career-high three assists. On the defensive end,
Bridget Sheehy led the team in caused turnovers with three. And in goal for Denison,
Julianne Henigan tallied three saves for the day, while Capital's Emily Serafinchon tallied 15 for the night.
