Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s lacrosse falls to No. 4 Tufts in Sweet 16

LANCASTER, Pa. (May 18, 2024) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team had its NCAA Tournament run come to an end on Saturday afternoon following a 22-13 loss to No. 4 nationally-ranked Tufts University in the third round of the tournament hosted at Franklin and Marshall College.

The Big Red ended their 11th season under Head Coach Amanda Daniels 10 games above .500 (15-5 overall) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the ninth time in school history and for the sixth season in a row.

It was the first-ever matchup between Denison and Tufts (16-3), and was just the sixth game ever for the Big Red against a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe.

The Jumbos wasted no time forging a lead in the first quarter as Tufts netted six of the game's first seven goals and took an 8-2 edge into the second quarter. Denison then trailed 14-5 at halftime as Tufts was a perfect 10-for-10 on clear attempts with just two turnovers at the break.

Denison was also outshot 29-13 in the first half and 42-27 for the game, but outshot the Jumbos 14-13 in the second half.

In the final 30 minutes of play, Denison and Tufts went goal-for-goal, but the deficit from the first half proved to be too much.

Anna DeVuono scored twice in the first quarter and turned in a hat trick in the second quarter, scoring her third goal of the game with 6:28 remaining in the first half.

In the end, DeVuono matched her career-high with five goals while Merrill Rollhaus set her career-high with four goals and added two groundballs. Josie Lucchesi had three goals and Bridget Sheehy added two assists. Denison was also 2-for-2 on free position shots (Lucchesi, DeVuono). Tufts, meanwhile, had 14 players find the score sheet.

Mary Daniel had seven draw controls for the Big Red while Sheehy had four and Rollhaus had three.

Starting goalkeeper Julianne Henigan finished with seven saves, six of which came in the second quarter. Both teams finished the game with eight saves.

Tufts advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth straight season dating back to 2019.
