GREENCASTLE, Ind. (May 10, 2024) – The third-seeded Denison University softball team's 2024 season came to a close following a 5-1 loss to top-seeded DePauw University in the first game on Friday morning at the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Denison was the only NCAC team able to defeat DePauw during the regular season, but in the conference tournament, it was the Tigers who got their payback and advanced to the championship game.
An error on a single to left field allowed the first run of the game for DePauw to score in the bottom of the first inning, and then a two-run home run by Emily Timberman made it 3-0 in the first.
Both teams left two runners on base in the second inning, and then Denison left a runner on second base in the top of the third inning.
An error at shortstop in the bottom of the third inning ultimately led to a two-out RBI-double to make it a 4-0 DePauw lead.
Denison got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly to right field by
Leilah Ferrari, but a swinging strikeout left two more runners on base.
DePauw added a solo home run with two outs by Alex Romero-Salas in the bottom of the fourth before Denison left two runners on base for the third time in the game in the top of the fifth.
Romero-Salas (12-5) also pitched the last four innings for the Tigers, picking up the win after allowing four hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
Denison stranded a two-out double down the left field line by Ferrari in the top of the sixth.
In the final inning, Denison got a leadoff single down the left field line by
Indy Workman and a one-out single through the left side by
Alessandra Groome to put two runners on base, but a lineout to second base and a fielder's choice to third base was all she wrote on the Big Red's season.
In all, Denison left 10 runners on base and left a runner in scoring position in each of the last six innings.
Denison ends its season 25-12 overall and after earning second place in the NCAC regular-season standings.
