Women’s lacrosse beats DePauw in NCAC Semifinals

GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 1, 2024) – The top-seeded Denison University women's lacrosse team led 8-0 after the first quarter and ultimately led 17-0 en route to advancing to the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game with a 18-2 defeat of fourth-seeded DePauw University in the conference semifinals on Wednesday in Granville.

The first goal came from Maddie Morrell assisted by Jane Lukens less than two and a half minutes in, and then Morrell's second goal made it 3-0 with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

Seven different players scored for the Big Red during the 8-0 first quarter while Addie Clift and Josie Lucchesi both recorded a goal and an assist.

Denison also outshot DePauw 17-2 in the opening period, won 6-of-9 draw controls and kept the Tigers to only a 2-for-5 conversation rate on clear attempts.

The Big Red were 7-for-7 on clear attempts in the first quarter and finished a perfect 19-for-19 for the game.

The second quarter featured three goals by Anna DeVuono while the second goal of the game by Clift came with 1:06 left on the clock and made the score 13-0 at halftime.

The third quarter would feature the third goal of the game by Martinson before Jamie Epstein scored the final goal of the third period and the first goal of the fourth quarter.

Sydney Lavin scored her fourth goal of the season and made it 17-0 with 9:37 left to play before Denison's final goal of the game came from Ellie Muldoon, her first goal of the season, with 17 seconds remaining.

For DeVuono, it was her second game in a row scoring three goals while for Epstein, it was her second game in a row scoring two goals. In addition, Clift (2 goals; 1 assist) matched her career-high in points as a freshman.

Goalkeeper Julianne Henigan played 38 minutes and made six saves while not allowing a single goal on eight shots faced.

In all, the Big Red defense held DePauw scoreless for three quarters and for over 53 minutes. Denison held a 37-14 advantage in shots, including 28-11 in shots on goal. DePauw totaled 13 turnovers to Denison's seven with the Big Red leading in ground balls, 13-7. The Big Red als led in draw controls, 13-10.

Denison improves to 13-4 overall this season with 12 straight wins entering Sunday's (May 5) NCAC Tournament Championship game, where the Big Red will host either second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University or third-seeded Kenyon College. It will be Denison's 12th appearance in the last 13 NCAC Tournament Championship games and will be its 10th straight appearance under the leadership of Head Coach Amanda Daniels.
