Game Recap: Softball |

Big Red fall in eight innings in game one, shut out 2-0 in game two by Marietta

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 9, 2024) – The Denison University softball team fell 5-4 in eight innings in game one and was shut out 2-0 in game two during nonconference action against Marietta College on Tuesday. Despite playing on their home field, the Big Red played as the visiting team on the scoreboard in both contests as the doubleheader was originally scheduled to take place at Marietta.

Game 1 (Denison 4, Marietta 5 – 8 innings):
  • Both teams finished with five hits, the first of which was a leadoff home run to left field by Annabelle Calderon in the top of the second inning.
  • Down 3-2 in the fourth inning, Denison tied it with a two-out RBI-single down the right field line by Jacqui Abogado, scoring the pinch runner in Natalie Omahen.
  • After Brooke Surbaugh (5-4) left two Marietta runners in scoring position with a groundout and a flyout in the bottom of the seventh, Denison took the lead in the top of the eighth as Surbaugh tried to help her own cause with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Alessandra Groome.
  • In the bottom half of the eighth, however, Surbaugh walked the leadoff batter before Marietta loaded the bases with nobody out as Abogado was just late trying to get the force out on a slow roller to third base. After a very lengthy at bat, Surbaugh got a flyout to right field for out number one, but then a two-run hit through the left side by Jillian Middleton ended it as Camryn Campbell scored from second and just beat the throw home from Groome in left field.
  • Surbaugh threw the complete game with 7.1 innings pitched allowing five hits, five total runs, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts, but it wasn't enough as Middleton (3-4) earned the win in the circle by pitching the final four innings allowing one hit, one unearned run, three walks and four strikeouts.
  • At the plate, Surbaugh was 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk.

Game 2 (Denison 0, Marietta 2):
  • The only runs of the game came after a leadoff error in left field in the bottom of the third inning. After the error, a walk, and a single back to the pitcher to load the bases with nobody out, Marietta scored on an RBI-single to left field and a sacrifice fly also to left field.
  • Sydney Silverstein (5-2) finished with five innings pitched allowing seven hits, two total runs, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts.
  • The Big Red offense, meanwhile, was limited to just four hits, never had more than one hit in a single inning, and only had two runners on base at the same time once after back-to-back two-out walks by Jordyn Maurer and Indy Workman in the top of the third.
  • Two of Denison's four hits came from Calderon with a leadoff single through the left side in the second inning and a leadoff single to left center in the fourth.
  • Workman also got on base twice as she hit a one-out double to right center in the sixth.
  • Denison's remaining hit was a two-out single through the right side by pinch hitter Emerson Seevers in the seventh.

Records:
  • Denison's record moves to 13-7 overall while Marietta's goes to 9-12.
