SALEM, Va. (March 2, 2024) – Playing in what was the third game of four straight road contests to open the new 2024 season for the Denison University women's lacrosse team, the No. 23 Big Red fell 14-7 at No. 17 Roanoke College on Saturday.
Despite scoring the first goal of both the first and second quarters by
Bridget Sheehy and
Maddie Morrell, respectively, Denison (1-2 overall) tallied just one goal in each of the first three quarters and trailed 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, 9-2 at halftime and 14-3 after three quarters.
After Morrell's goal made it 5-2 in the opening minute of the second quarter, Roanoke (2-1) scored eight straight times to take a 13-2 lead with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter before a goal by
Jane Lukens finally stopped the nearly 24-minute Big Red scoring drought.
Mary Daniel finished with four draw controls for the Big Red while
Grayson O'Marra had a pair of caused turnovers and both
Ashley Viglione and
Mary Martinson had two groundballs.
In goal, freshman
Julianne Henigan made three saves in her 23 minutes while fellow-freshman
Cate Dannahey made her first-career appearance and played all 15 minutes during what was a scoreless fourth quarter for Roanoke.
Next Saturday, Denison will play in its fourth straight road game to open the season and third such game against a fellow nationally-ranked team as the Big Red head to the No. 19-ranked University of Chicago for a 1 p.m. matchup on March 9. Last season, the Big Red fell 20-9 at home against Chicago during the regular season before earning a 10-9 road win in triple overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
