Denison shuts out Ohio Wesleyan to clinch NCAC regular season title

GRANVILLE, Ohio (Nov. 2) – The Denison University women's soccer team used an all-around team effort to secure 3-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University in the regular season finale at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium. The win gave the Big Red the regular season title outright in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Denison finishes the regular season with 16 points to claim the NCAC regular season title and top seed in next week's conference tournament. The conference title is Denison's conference-best 12th all time.

The Big Red are 5-1-1 in NCAC play and 10-4-3 overall. The loss drops Ohio Wesleyan to 2-2-3 in the conference and 9-5-3 overall.

The Big Red made the most of its chances in what became a lopsided victory over its conference rival. Denison got on the scoreboard in the first half when Eliza Roach punched in a rebound to take a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute of play. Isabella Guzman was credited with an assist after her initial shot was collected by Roach who scored her second goal of the season.

Denison tacked on a pair of second half scores to put away the Battling Bishops. This time it was Guzman finding the back of the net. A nice pass from just in front of the corner flag found a cutting Guzman, who connected with the ball during her slide and found the lower right corner of the net. That Guzman score, her second of the season, came in the 69th minute of play.

Less than 10 minutes later, Denison tacked on a third goal for good measure. After a defensive miscommunication by Ohio Wesleyan allowed Lola Tirabassi to collect a loose ball and fire a shot past the Battling Bishops' keeper on a 1-on-1 opportunity. The goal is the third of the season for Tirabassi.

Denison held a 10-9 advantage in shots which included a 4-1 shots on goal margin. OWU held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Guzman totaled a game-high three shots while Roach and Tirabassi added two apiece.

Molly Noga picked up the victory in goal. The junior worked all 90 minutes.

Up Next: Denison will host fourth-seeded Wittenberg University in the NCAC Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
