GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 23, 2023) – Led by the first two career goals for freshman
Claire Willoughby, Denison University field hockey tallied its fifth shutout win in a row after taking down Kenyon College, 4-0, during Denison field hockey's Alumnae & Family Weekend. The victory also helped the Big Red improve to 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
After four saves by Kenyon's Megan Lydon in a scoreless first quarter, Denison scored the first goal of the game in the final three minutes of the second quarter when Willoughby took the penalty corner and then put herself in position in front of the goal for the tip-in off the pass from
Abigail Hano.
Then just over one minute into the third quarter,
Grace Lock took it into the box all by herself and scored past Lydon to make it 2-0.
Denison added two more goals in the final quarter as Willoughby scored her second goal to make it 3-0 after the assist by
Nina Casingal in the 48th minute, and then a hard shot by
Kate Hinshaw in the 50th minute left Lydon with no chance to make the stop.
In addition to Willoughby's effort, Saturday's scoring marked the first-career goal for Hinshaw and the first goal of the season for Lock.
Hinshaw and
Lila Smith both put all three of their shots in the game on goal while Willoughby put both of her attempts across the line.
With the win, Denison improved to 5-2 overall while Kenyon dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Next up, the Big Red will hit the road for a pair of road games next weekend, beginning on Saturday, September 30, at Transylvania University, before playing again the next day (Sunday, Oct. 1) at Centre College.
