Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Bailey leads women’s lacrosse past Hope in NCAA First Round

CHICAGO, Ill. (May 12, 2023) – Jane Bailey recorded seven points and the Denison University women's lacrosse team scored five goals in three different quarters to earn an 18-10 victory over Hope College on Friday during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Maddie Morrell scored the first goal of the game on the assist by Josie Lucchesi one minute in and then tied it at 2-2 with a goal assisted by Bailey just over two and a half minutes in.

Goals by Bailey (8:51) and Mary Martinson (7:26) made it a 3-0 Denison run to take a 4-2 lead before Bailey scored her second goal of the first quarter with 1:04 on the clock to make it a 5-3 first-quarter for the Big Red.

Martinson then opened up the second quarter with her second goal of the day just over 30 seconds in to make it 6-3 Big Red.

After a pair of goals just 10 seconds apart by Hope to get back to within one (6-5) with 11:45 left in the second quarter, a goal by Emma Repke (9:46) assisted by Bailey gave Denison some breathing room until a free position goal by Jane Lukens in the final minute and a half of the second quarter made it a three-goal margin again (8-5) at the break.

The Big Red then stepped on the gas in the second half and outscored the Flying Dutch 5-1 in the third quarter to take firm control of the contest as Morrell scored her third goal with just two seconds left in the period to give Denison at 13-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Three of Denison's five goals in the fourth quarter came via free position shots.

Bailey finished with three goals and four assists while Martinson matched her and Morrell with three goals scored.

Both teams finished with seven saves and 24 turnovers while Denison outshot Hope by nine (32-23) and recorded 21 of 31 draw controls in the game. Nine of those draw controls for the Big Red came from Mary Daniel while Merrill Rollhaus added six.

The two teams also finished within two groundballs (23-21 Hope) and one caused turnover (13-12 Hope) of each other. Ryann Yospa and Caroline O'Dea both had two caused turnovers for the Big Red while Abby Van Metre led with three groundballs.

Denison improves to .500 (10-10) overall on the season and will advance to the NCAA Second Round to take on the host school and No. 17 nationally-ranked the University of Chicago (16-2) at 1 p.m. Central Time / 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, May 13. It will be a rematch from their regular-season matchup earlier this season (Mar. 4) at Denison in which Chicago won by a score of 20-9.
