DELAWARE, Ohio (April 23, 2023) – Just one day after falling 13-12 in overtime against No. 21-ranked and undefeated Kenyon College, the Denison University women's lacrosse team hit the road and came away with a 14-5 win over the third-place team in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, Ohio Wesleyan University, on Sunday afternoon at Shelby Stadium.
With the win over an Ohio Wesleyan (10-5 overall, 3-2 NCAC) team that was 5-0 at home and riding a three-game winning streak entering the day, Denison (7-9, 5-1) secured at least second place in the conference standings and wrapped up its conference slate on a high note.
The Big Red were able to pull away from the Battling Bishops thanks to a 5-1 second quarter that started with back-to-back goals by
Maddie Morrell and
Josie Lucchesi in the first two minutes of the period.
Emma Repke then scored her second goal of the game with 8:26 on the clock in the second quarter before a goal by
Grayson O'Marra with just under four minutes left until halftime made it 7-2 Denison.
Morrell then scored in the final 10 seconds of the first half and scored the first goal of the third quarter almost nine and a half minutes in to make it 9-3, and then after OWU got to within 9-5 early in the fourth quarter, back-to-back goals by
Anna DeVuono and Lucchesi all put but it away.
Morrell led the way with four goals while Lucchesi finished with three goals and one assist,
Jane Bailey added three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and Repke and DeVuono both scored twice.
Repke and
Mary Daniel both finished with a pair of caused turnovers while
Kate Coward picked up four groundballs and
Merrill Rollhaus led with five draw controls.
Next up will be Denison's final game of the regular season as the Big Red travel to play at No. 2 nationally-ranked Washington and Lee University starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, in Lexington, Virginia. This will be a special game for Head Coach
Amanda Daniels and the rest of the Big Red with the presence of former Denison Associate Head Coach Maddie Coleman now roaming the sidelines as head coach of the Generals after spending the previous nine years in Granville.
