Offense struggles at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 11, 2023) – The Denison University softball team fell in two very low-scoring games, 2-1 and 1-0, on the road at Waynesburg University on Tuesday.

Game 1 (Denison 1, Waynesburg 2):
  • Sydney Silverstein (6-4) struck out the side in the bottom of the first, left the bases loaded after a foul out to third base in the second, again struck out the side in the third, and set the Yellow Jackets down in order in the fourth inning.
  • Denison's offense, meanwhile, got on the board in the top of the third inning as Maggie Ballentine singled to center field with two outs before coming all the way around to score on a double to left field by Brianna Gonzalez.
  • With runners on second and third base with just one out in the bottom of the fifth inning for Waynesburg, Silverstein got her seventh strikeout followed by a groundout to first base to preserve the 1-0 lead.
  • However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Waynesburg loaded the bases with one out, and after Silverstein got a pop out to right field for out number two, the Yellow Jackets' Sydney Wilson came up with a two-run single to right field to put the home team in front.
  • In addition to the game-winning hit, Wilson also stymied the Big Red from the pitching circle as she tossed all seven innings and limited Denison to four hits, one run and one walk while striking out eight.
  • On the other side, Silverstein finished with a line of six innings pitched allowing five hits, two runs and four walks while also striking out eight.

Game 2 (Denison 0, Waynesburg 1):
  • After Denison left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, a leadoff walk issued by Brooke Surbaugh (4-5) came back to bite her in the bottom of the first as a one-out double to left field put the Yellow Jackets in front 1-0.
  • The Big Red then left two runners in scoring position in the second, went down 1-2-3 in the third and fifth innings, did nothing with a leadoff double by Annabelle Calderon in the sixth, and went down 1-2-3 for the third time in the game in the seventh.
  • Surbaugh allowed five hits, one run and three walks while striking out seven in her six innings to earn the complete game, but Waynesburg's Autumn Stemple limited the Big Red to five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.
  • Two of those five hits for Denison came from freshman Erika Gustafson, which were the first two hits of her career.

Records:
  • Denison fell back to .500 overall on the season at 10-10 and is now just 2-7 on the road this season while Waynesburg won its 12th and 13th games in a row to improve to 19-3 overall and 9-1 on its home field. It was the first meeting between the two teams since their first time playing each other in 2003.

Next Up: Denison will host its Senior Day against Hiram College starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.
