NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 26, 2023) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team held a 7-3 lead in the second quarter, but from there, it was a 13-0 run for the Captains that sent Christopher Newport University to a 16-7 victory over the Big Red on Sunday at Jennings Family Stadium.
It was the first-ever meeting between Denison (2-7 overall) and Christopher Newport (3-5), which entered the contest coming off of three straight losses against nationally-ranked teams.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the first quarter with Denison holding on to a 4-3 lead after a goal by
Allaire Kotz in the final two minutes of the opening period, and then the Big Red went ahead 7-3 thanks to goals by
Mary Martinson and
Anna DeVuono followed by another goal by Kotz just over seven minutes into the second quarter.
From there, however, the Big Red were held scoreless the rest of the way while the Captains answered back with three goals in the final five minutes of the first half to get it back to a one-score game (7-6) at halftime.
Just over five minutes into the third quarter, a goal by CNU's Kelsey Winters tied it, and then Winters assisted on a goal by Syd Guidi a little over a minute later to give the Captains their first lead of the game up 8-7.
Winters added another assist on the next CNU goal, and then the Captains scored three goals in the final 1:06 of the third quarter to wrap up a 6-0 third period for the home team.
In the second half, Denison won only two of 11 draw controls and was outshot 21-5 overall and 15-2 on shots on goal.
Winters finished with a game-high five points (2 goals, 3 assists) while for the Big Red,
Jane Bailey (2 goals, 1 assist) played a part in each of Denison's first three goals of the game and
Mary Daniel finished with three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Next up, Denison will return home for the first time since March 5 to host Mary Washington University starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 1.
