GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 7, 2023) – Denison University field hockey tallied its sixth conference win of the season in six tries after defeating Wittenberg University, 1-0, on a cold Saturday morning inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
It was a pretty even matchup with Denison (7-3 overall, 6-0 NCAC) outshooting Wittenberg (7-5, 2-3) by just one shot overall (7-6) and just two shots on goal (5-3) while the Tigers led 5-4 in penalty corners.
After three shots for Denison in the first quarter, including a penalty stroke by
Nina Casingal that was saved by Wittenberg's Caitlin Archdeacon in the eighth minute, the Big Red were able to capitalize on the lone shot of the second quarter as a nice pass from
Abigail Hano was guided into the goal by
Emma Gebhart in the 20th minute.
It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Gebhart, a freshman from Carlisle, Massachusetts.
Starting in the 43rd minute, Denison goalkeeper
Athena Joannou made her first save of the game and then added a second save just 39 seconds later following a penalty corner by the Tigers.
Joannou made one final save in the 53rd minute en route to recording her seventh shutout of the season and seventh game with three or more saves.
Next up for the Big Red will be a big road game at DePauw University starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 12. DePauw and Denison are two of three NCAC teams undefeated in conference action so far this season.
