DELAWARE, Ohio (October 28, 2023) – In a rematch of the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match in which the Big Red won 2-0, the Denison University women's soccer team fell 3-0 at Ohio Wesleyan University in its 2023 regular-season finale on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. With the loss, Denison will be the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament next week.
Denison, which was looking to rebound after its first conference loss of the season (2-0) at home vs. Wittenberg University on Wednesday, was unable to get anything going in this one as it gave up two goals in the first half.
The Big Red offense saw OWU goalkeeper Natalie Ryan save early shots by
Kate Dalimonte and
Ellie Reiser in the first three and a half minutes of the match being saving another by Dalimonte in the seventh minute. Then Ryan's fourth save of the first half came on a shot by
Mara McGlone in the 28th minute.
Then after the Battling Bishops made it 3-0 in the first three minutes of the second half, Ryan added another save on a shot by
Kendall Sierens just 20 seconds later before recording her sixth and final save of the match on an attempt by
Keaton Rahman in the 75th minute.
A shot by
Ava Wood hit the crossbar in the 89th minute as the Big Red just did not have any luck in this one whatsoever.
Denison did outshoot OWU 6-5 on goal and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
With its first loss against OWU since 2012, Denison falls to 6-4-6 overall and 3-2-2 in the NCAC. The Big Red will enter the NCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will begin tournament play on Thursday, November 2, when they travel to Springfield, Ohio, to take on No. 1-seeded Wittenberg, which just defeated Denison 2-0 in Granville, Ohio, earlier this week.
