WASHINGTON, Pa. (October 28, 2023) – The Denison University field hockey team won 1-0 at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon in its final game of the 2023 regular season. It was the first meeting between the two teams as North Coast Athletic Conference opponents.
Denison (11-5 overall, 9-1 NCAC) outshot W&J (6-10, 4-6) 19-0 overall and 14-0 on goal and saw senior
Grace Lock score her second goal of the season following a penalty corner from
Kate Hinshaw in the final four and a half minutes of the first half.
In the first quarter alone, Denison put up seven shots on five shots on goal as a pair of attempts by
Lila Smith (2nd minute; 14th minute) and three shots in the final minute by
Nina Casingal,
Katherine Flanagan and
Claire Willoughby were all saved.
Smith put all five of her shots in the game on goal while Flanagan and
Abigail Hano both had three shots and
Rachel Gilio and Casingal both had two.
For the Big Red defense, it was their 11th shutout of the season as they lowered their goals-against average to 0.73 goals per game. Additionally, in 10 conference games this season, the Big Red did not allow a single goal
The Big Red will now set their sights on the NCAC Tournament with the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday, November 1. The No. 2-seeded Big Red will host No. 3-seeded DePauw University starting at 5 p.m. inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. Earlier this month, Denison defeated DePauw 2-0 on the road behind first-half goals by Smith and
Tabitha Chandler.
