HIRAM, Ohio (October 21, 2023) –
Kendall Sierens' goal in the 52nd minute resulted in a 1-0 win for the Denison University women's soccer team at Hiram College on Saturday night.
Denison (6-2-6 overall, 3-0-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) outshot Hiram (4-9-2, 0-5-0) 13-1 overall and 7-0 on goal in the first half but could not get one into the back of the net as
Ellie Reiser hit the crossbar four minutes in.
After making seven saves in the first half, Hiram's Skyler Huda made another on a shot by
Mara McGlone in the first two minutes of the second half, but could not stop Sierens' athletic one-timer in the 52nd minute.Â
After several minutes of offensive pressure, the Big Red found their game-winner off the foot of Sierens.
Callie Davis fired two shots off against the Terriers moments before the goal, her second shot resulting in a goal kick for Hiram. The Terriers' keeper played the ball out, but it came flying right back towards the 18-yard box after Denison won the aerial battle. Sierens then hit a one-touch volley out of the air while running at top speed to push the Big Red ahead for the remainder of the contest.
For Sierens, it was her first goal since scoring both goals in Denison's 2-1 season-opening win at Alma College (Sept. 1).
The Big Red continued to challenge Huda and the Terriers with 14 more shots the rest of the way, but ultimately Denison finished with just one goal on 32 total attempts and 15 shots on goal.
Just one week after shooting a career-high seven shots at the College of Wooster, Davis finished with a career-high eight shots this time around while Reiser, McGlone,
Eliza Roach and
Emma Wecht each had three shots.
Meanwhile, Hiram's lone shot on goal came in the 63rd minute as
Molly Noga recorded her second straight clean sheet.
In addition, it was an improved defensive effort by the Terriers, who had previously given up at least three goals in each of their first four conference matches of the season.
Next up, Denison will play in its final home match of the regular season as the Big Red host Wittenberg University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, before wrapping up the regular season on the road at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, at Ohio Wesleyan University.
