GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 24, 2022) – In what was its final game before the start of North Coast Athletic Conference play next week, the Denison University field hockey team earned a 1-0 win in nonconference action over DePauw University on Saturday inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
In what also began as a matchup of two 3-3 teams from the NCAC, Denison got the leg up going into conference play as
Madeleine Hunt scored the lone goal of the game in the 36th minute.
After taking a penalty corner, Hunt did what she does best, and that is position herself near the goal for a deflection. After Hunt passed the penalty corner up top,
Abigail Hano sent the ball toward the goal, where Hunt, who has the uncanny ability to be in the right place and the right time, gathered the loose ball and finished it off.
For Hunt, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season and third game-winning goal.
The Denison defense, meanwhile, limited DePauw to only one shot on goal in the game, which required a save from
Athena Joannou in the 21st minute. In the end, Joannou recorded her third 1-0 shutout win of the season.
With the win, Denison (4-3 overall) heads into conference play undefeated at home (3-0) while DePauw drops to below .500 on the season at 3-4.
Next up, Denison will open up conference play at home against Kenyon College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, as apart of the Big Red Weekend festivities.
