WOOSTER, Ohio (September 17, 2022) – For the first time during the current 2022 season, the Denison University field hockey team earned a win on the road as the Big Red defeated the College of Wooster 1-0 in double overtime during nonconference action on Saturday.
To start the second overtime period, Denison goalkeeper
Athena Joannou had to make four saves in the first two minutes to stave off a flurry of shots by the Wooster offense.
Then to start the 77th minute, a shot by
Madeleine Hunt was wide, but was followed by a penalty corner taken by Hunt, who then snuck back in by the goal and waited for her opportunity. After the cross to the back post by
Katherine Flanagan, Hunt was wide open to tap it in and send the Big Red home with a win.
It was very similar to Denison's season-opening 1-0 win at home over Roanoke College when Hunt took a penalty corner in the fourth quarter and ended up getting the deflection by the goal to win it.
The Big Red defense held Wooster to without a shot attempt in the first half while firing nine shots of their own and putting six of those attempts on goal.
One of those shots for Denison in the first half was a penalty stroke by
Grace Lock that was saved by Fighting Scots' goalkeeper Cate Barkdoll in the 17th minute.
Hunt and Lock each put both of their shots in the first half on goal. In all, Denison outshot Wooster 8-0 in the second quarter, resulting in five saves for Barkdoll.
The only shot of the third quarter for each team went to Wooster on a block by the Big Red defense, and both teams had one penalty corner in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, Denison had two penalty corners taken by
Kate Hinshaw in the first three and a half minutes, leading to a shot by
Meg Baylis that resulted in a defensive save by Wooster's Lucy Agurkis.
With the win, Denison moves to above .500 overall on the season at 3-2. Additionally, the Big Red have now defeated Wooster (1-4) in each of their last seven meetings, but this was the first of the seven that was not by at least two goals.
Next up for the Big Red will be another nonconference game on the road at an NCAC opponent as this time, Denison heads to Kenyon College starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20.
