Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late goal haunts women’s soccer again

GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 11, 2022) – The second match at home for the Denison University women's soccer team in as many days resulted in a third straight 1-0 loss for the Big Red against Kalamazoo College on a rainy Sunday afternoon inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2009. On that day, it was another rainy day in Granville as after a scoreless first half, Denison adjusted to the wet conditions to score four second-half goals in a 4-0 victory.

This time around, however, the action followed a similar trajectory to Denison's match against Concordia University (Wis.) just one day earlier with Denison controlling the majority of the action until a late goal by the opposition.

The Big Red held the Hornets to three shots in each half and doubled them up in total shot attempts at 12-6, but it was the shot with just over three minutes left for Kalamazoo that made the difference.

Denison had the first six shots of the match by five different players, but it was Kalamazoo that almost struck first as in the 41st minute, Elle Bernas ran through the Big Red defense and had only the goalkeeper Wynne Hague to beat, but Hague was up to the challenge and came up with a lunging save.

The Big Red had a couple of chances to break the scoring drought midway through the second half, but Amy Chiero missed high in the 60th minute before Callie Davis had a shot saved by Kalamazoo's Lexi Nesbitt two minutes later.

After a shot by Caroline Flynn was saved by Nesbitt in the 75th minute, Leland Keller missed wide left and then wide right at the 77 and 79-minute marks, respectively. Keller would finish with a match-high three shot attempts.

Unfortunately, that would be Denison's final shot attempt of the match, setting the stage for a Hornets' goal off a deflection by the Big Red defense in the 87th minute.

Denison fell to 0-4 to start the season while Kalamazoo, which earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Kenyon college on Saturday, improved to 2-1-2.

Next up, Denison will hit the road for a pair of matches in Kentucky as the Big Red play at Transylvania University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, in Lexington, followed by No. 14 nationally-ranked Centre College at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, in Danville.
